The Ultra-precision Maching Centre (UMC), based in the Department of Manufacturing Engineering of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, was established in 1996. Funded by the Industry and Technology Development Council (ITDC) of the Hong Kong Government, the Centre is the first of its kind in Hong Kong to engage in the promotion and application of ultra-precision maching technology for precision mould and optics industries

The Centre is jointly developed by the Department of Manufacturing Engineering of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the Hong Kong Productivity Council with support from the Industry Department of the Hong Kong Government

The main emphasis of the Centre's activities is placed on providing services in consultancy, contract research and the manpower training
