  • The Department of Applied Social Studies at the Polytechnic University is a major center for the education of professional social workers, kindergarten teachers and child-care workers in Hong Kong

    The Department began as the Institute of Social Work Training, a teaching unit within the Social Welfare Department founded in 1973 to provide in-service training to front-line social workers. The Institute ran a two-year full-time programme leading to a Diploma in Social Work

    In 1977, the Institute 'joined' the Hong Kong Polytechnic and became its School of Social Work. In 1986, the School was renamed the Department of Applied Social Studies (APSS)
