Description
  • "Report on a journey from Peking to Shanghai overland by way of Honan by Mr. S .F. Mayers of Her Majesty's Consular Service in China"--p.[3]

  • Series: Diplomatic and consular reports. Miscellaneous series ; no. 466

  • In choosing a route for this journey, we were influenced chiefly by a desire to follow as far as possible the line of country which will probably be taken by any railway of the future connecting Peking with the cities of the central and southern provinces. The ordinary route from Peking to the Yangtze lies through Shantung, along the Grand Canal

In the present case a deviation was made from this line, the great south road being followed to the Yellow River, which was crossed just north of K'ai-feng-fu [河南省開封] ; and from this city the eastern road was taken to Ch'ing-chiang-p'u [江蘇省清江浦] on the Grand Canal. This forms a land journey of 900 miles, and from this point the remainder of the way was made by boat

In three days Chinkiang was reached, and from there we took passage by a river steamer, reaching Shanghai the next day, the forty-second since leaving Peking
