Open Learning Institute of Hong Kong : K.S. YuenThis paper aims to derive alternative constructs which can be used to describe and explain student progress in distance education courses. The development of a Distance Education Students' Progress inventory is described
Four scales, made up from seventeen sub-scales, emerge from the factor analysis. The scales relate to approach to learning, motivation, language ability, course evaluation and the extent to which the student is able to integrate study demands with personal, family, work and social commitments. Semi-structured interviews were used to assist in deriving and interpreting the scales and to help establish their validity
